10 movies still to see in 2009

July 30, 2009 at 12:21 pm (Movies)

1. Antichrist (Lars von Trier, 09.10) – Despite being ultra-weird and heavy on symbolistic madness, not even Cannes could resist, and coughed up some awards. Yes, it’s THAT good.

2. Inglourious Basterds (Quentin Tarantino, 04.09) – QT fans will love this. QT haters will also probably love this – but will claim to hate it, because it’s hip to hate succesful auteurs. Either way, probably another QT classic.

3. The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus (Terry Gilliam, 06.11) – Terry Gilliam flicks are rare and brilliant. This one is no exception.

4. Jennifer’s Body (Karyn Kusama, 30.10) – Two words. Megan. Fox.

5. Where the Wild Things Are (Spike Jonze, 11.12) – I don’t know much about this movie, but I like Jonze’s earlier work, and the trailer looks surprisngly great.

6. Shutter Island (Martin Scorsese, 23.11) – Martin Scorsese directing a thriller/horror starring Leo Di Caprio? Unmissable.

7. Avatar (James Cameron, 18.12) – Even if Cameron would shoot 2 hours-worth of nothing, the movie would still be a huge hit (see Titanic). Imagine what would happen if the film was actually good. This one looks promising.

8. District 9 (Neill Blomkamp, no release date yet) – Ultra-weird internet-only teasers raised huge interest in this flick. Then the trailer came out and showed lots of promise. This could be more than weird. It could be good.

9. 9 (Shane Acker, no release date yet) – Again, interest hyped by awesome-looking trailer. Plus, if Tim Burton’s involved (even as a producer), well, it’s a must.

10. A Serious Man (Joel & Ethan Coen, no release date yet) – After their hectic last couple of movies, the Coens are toning it down with a very personal flick with unknown actors.

* The Road (John Hillcoat) would have easily made the list, but the film, released in October in the States, will arrive in January 2010 in Romania.

(Listed dates are the Romanian releases).

Entourage addict

July 29, 2009 at 10:56 am (TV shows)

I am officially an Entourage addict. You should be too. Why?

Well, for starters, because it’s an amazing show. Really interesting characters, superbly acted, and perfectly written. Once you get the first few episodes out of the way, you end up feeling like you know them personally. Last night, when James Cameron called Vince to offer him the lead role in his new movie, I was literally happy. And I don’t usually get really involved like this, but this show leaves me no choice.

Let’s see, what else. It’s a hilarious show, that welcomes you to the high-life world of a Hollywood star.  I don’t think there’s any movie or tv show out there that gets you closer to all the madness. Guest stars pop in every ten minutes, playing themselves.

I can’t believe this show has been going on for so long and I just discovered it.

If you don’t know it, check it out. You’re in for an amazing ride.

Sorry for the lack of recent updates. Have been really busy, and also caught up in all the Monkey Island awesomeness of the last couple of weeks.

Anyway, here are a bunch of songs I’ve been humming along recently.

Ice Age madness

July 8, 2009 at 12:49 pm (Movies)

65.139 Romanians went to the cinema last weekend, to watch the new Ice Age flick. That means 474.798 USD obtained from ticket sales. That’s 3 times more than what Transformers 2 did in the debut weekend. That’s 7 times more than what Up – another 3D blockbuster animation – did in its first weekend, last month. And 8 times more than Monsters vs Aliens – yet another 3D animation released this year.

Coincidence? I don’t think so. Ice Age 3 is the first 3D animation distributed in our theaters in English, with subtitles. All the others were dubbed in Romanian. Now, imagine Sid, you know Sid, speaking in Romanian with a completely different voice. No wonder people would choose to stay home and watch the film on their laptops.

Hopefully this is a big fat lesson to all distributors in Romania. Dubbing is stupid, even for animations.
